Review: Bob Weir – Ace

Bob Weir – Ace (Warners/Reprise BS 2627)

To all the Dead fans out there, Bob Weir is as familiar as their mother. Weir, guitarist-vocalist for the Grateful Dead, has joined Jerry Garcia in producing a solo album.

The Dead were so appealing in their impromptu, jam style. Weir, however, obviously has gone into the studio with a tight idea of what he wants. There is nary a note of Ace that wasn’t plotted.

So what we have is an instrumentally acceptable, yet mechanical album. With a touch of rhythm ‘n blues.
