Teenage: “Nothing Lasts Forever, Except High School”

Comments Off

Cameron provides the humorous and touching introduction to Teenage, a 2003 book by Joseph Szabo. It’s a wonderful collection of photographs that Szabo took while teaching on Long Island in the 70s, 80s and 90s. Cameron uses the opportunity to recall some of the colorful characters from his high school and the parts they played. The book is now out of print and highly collectable, but you can find out more about Szabo over at his official site. Here’s just a taste at some of his deeply moving black and white images.

Crowe on Clapton

Comments Off

I’m pleased to share two new Eric Clapton pieces with you today. Both were published in late 1975 and were most likely culled from the same period of time that Cameron spent on the road with “slowhand”. First up, is a more of a career overview done for the L.A.Times entitled “E.C.’s Been Here, There and Everywhere”. Cameron chronicles his early days with The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes. This dovetails nicely into his solo career, along with his trails and tribulations.

The 2nd article is a more comprehensive Q & A with Clapton that Cameron conducted for Rolling Stone entitled “E.C.’s Here Again: ‘There’s Always Someone Faster'” and goes in-depth about his heroin problems, stage fright, rumors about joining the Rolling Stones and the music. While a few quotes overlap the L.A. Times, it’s a much more exhaustive and informative talk with Clapton. I thoroughly enjoyed transcribing both articles and hope you like them too!

Joni Mitchell – Dreamland Liner Notes

Comments Off

Cameron’s chronicles Joni’s Mitchell in his liner notes for her greatest hits/compilation, Dreamland, released in September 2004. It’s part biography and a part musical journey for this under appreciated artist. More liner notes will be added soon including Jackson Browne’s Running on Empty, David Bowie’s Station to Station and The Very Best of the Eagles.

2 Exclusive Zoo Photos From Cameron

Comments Off

Cameron Crowe's photo: Asked her about Cameron sent over these two exclusive photos that we he took on the set of We Bought a Zoo. Please say hello to Crystal, the capuchin monkey (who’s gotten more press lately than most folks out there) and John Michael Higgins taking a break in-between set-ups. As always, you can read Cameron’s thoughts on each pic, by simply clicking on the picture. I’ve seen Cameron’s pictures reported on other sites as movie stills. This is not the case, these are pictures that Cameron personally took during the filming of Zoo.

Phoebe Snow – July 17, 1950 – April 26, 2011

Comments Off

In honor of singer/songwriter Phoebe Snow’s passing last week, I thought it it would be a great time to share Cameron’s review of her debut self-titled album from the December 22, 1974 edition of the L.A. Times. Phoebe burst onto the scene that year and by 1975, had a Top 5 hit with “Poetry Man”, along with a platinum selling album. You can even tell by Cameron’s short review that he was quite fond of her album and thought she was a real talent.

In late 1975, Phoebe’s career took a backseat to caring for her daughter, Valerie Rose Laub, born with severe brain damage. While Phoebe continued to record throughout the years, her greatest achievement was her daughter. Unfortunately, she lost her daughter in 2007.

If you haven’t checked out her music, you really should. She was a gifted musician and will be missed.
