Vanilla Sky Is Proudly Polarizing

030

Unreality magazine lists their Top 10 Most Polarizing Films of the Decade and Vanilla Sky made the cut. This doesn’t surprise me at all, as many people either love it or hate it. Some love it so much, they saw it multiple times at the theater (and helped it reach $100 million in domestic box office) and dissect its multiple secrets, while others don’t like remakes, Tom Cruise or the ending. Here’s the list of films (in no particular order) that made their Top 10:

  • The Fall (2006)
  • Vanilla Sky (2001)
  • Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
  • The Blair Witch Project (1999)
  • Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
  • Moulin Rouge (2001)
  • The Village (2004)
  • Crash (2005)
  • I. (2001)
  • Watchmen (2009)

It’s True! Cameron Directs Pearl Jam!

Yes. The rumors are true. Cameron directed a Pearl Jam video/commercial this Thursday in Seattle (at the legendary Showbox). It also looks like a 20th anniversary documentary of the band is in the works with Crowe at the helm. Kelly Curtis, Pearl Jam’s manager, provides the details in this interview with Billboard. Here’s a few exciting quotes:

Curtis said that the Target commercial was only one reason for the Showbox session; with singer Eddie Vedder on tour supporting his solo work for the next month, “we had a narrow window to get some footage,” says Curtis. “We shot three or four songs that night.” Curtis said that some of the footage may be used for a project that Cameron Crowe is working on in connection to the band’s 20th anniversary.

The Beard Is Fake, right?…or is it?

Jimmy-Fallon-Almost-Famous

By now I’m sure you’ve seen Jimmy Fallon’s new late night talk show. If you recall, Jimmy played Stillwater’s 2nd manager in Almost Famous, Dennis. There’s a nice interview with Jimmy and he does mention a bit about the film. Here’s the relevant quote:

“Cameron Crowe is a genius. If he asked me to deliver coffee to the set of a new movie right now, I would do it. On Almost Famous I had a beard that everyone thinks is fake, but it’s not. I was sitting next to my mother during the premiere and she kept asking me when I would be in the movie. I pointed myself out and she didn’t believe me because of the beard.”

Holiday Leftovers

I hope everyone had a happy holiday and a safe new year. Here’s a roundup for news tidbits from the past few weeks or so. More love from Entertainment Weekly on their Top 1000 of the past 25 years in a few categories.

In the 25 Best Soundtracks Since ‘83Almost Famous lands at #23, while Singles was ranked #13.

For the 25 All Time Best High School Movies, we had two Crowe related films make the cut:

  • 11.Say Anything…
Go on: Hoist that boom box above your head and turn up ‘’In Your Eyes.’’ Stand motionless with a fixed expression of unrequited but determined love. And watch Cameron Crowe’s ode to young passion, which made John Cusack the thinking teen’s heartthrob and should have done the same for Ione Skye. If the postgraduation romance between an earnest kickboxer and a sheltered valedictorian doesn’t win you over, repeat steps one and two and listen closer. —Hannah Tucker
  • 2. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
 – When screenwriter Cameron Crowe went undercover to observe the species Teenagerus americanus, he returned with more than the usual grab-bag of anecdotes about horny, apple-pie-humping guys and the popularity-obsessed girls who must fight them off with a stick. He returned with 24-karat truth. To watch Fast Times today is to know exactly what it felt like to be fixated on sex, drugs, and rock & roll in Southern California circa 1982. It also launched careers and dished out still-relevant life lessons: Jennifer Jason Leigh (relax your throat muscles when fellating a carrot), Phoebe Cates (always knock before entering a bathroom), and Judge Reinhold (see above). And Sean Penn’s Jeff Spicoli, with his checkerboard Vans and bong-hit grin, was a geyser of catchphrases (‘’Aloha, Mr. Hand!’’). The film never strains for coming-of-age treacle. Maybe that’s why it still feels so…right. Especially Damone’s sage advice: ‘’When it comes down to making out, whenever possible put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV.’’ —Chris Nashawaty

Vinyl Films Assists Pearl Jam Ten Reissue

This is amazing news! My two favorite things combining forces. Here’s an excerpt from the press release.

Ten, the debut album that sold 12 million copies and introduced the world to Pearl Jam in 1991, will be reissued in four (4) new and expanded editions. Pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Edition begin today, through the Ten Club at PearlJam.com. All four editions will be available for purchase on March 24, 2009. The reissue of Ten serves as the launch of a planned two-year catalogue re-release campaign leading up to the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011.

Each Ten package will include two versions of the album: the remastered version of the original album PLUS an accompanying remixed version done by the band’s long-time producer, Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Audioslave). Details on specific extras for each of the four packages are listed below.

“The band loved the original mix of Ten, but were also interested in what it would sound like if I were to deconstruct and remix it,” says producer Brendan O’Brien. “The original Ten sound is what millions of people bought, dug and loved, so I was initially hesitant to mess around with that. After years of persistent nudging from the band, I was able to wrap my head around the idea of offering it as a companion piece to the original – giving a fresh take on it, a more direct sound.”

TEN RE-DESIGN

Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).

“The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way.”

“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band…a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”
